John Carl

May 5

Righto, more photography. I’ve got an event coming up for my studio entitled “The First Annual ClickClick Social” (feel free to pop along) where I’m going to have to do proper portraits of all of my guests, all professional and that.

It should be a good laugh and a good bit of practice for me with a ringflash and a couple of strobes, possibly a softbox to. Over the last month or so, I’ve been checking out people who bring their a-game out in portraiture and John Carl’s stuff hit the spot. Nice job.

The Quiet Revolution

April 29

Owls and Tigers are pretty decent creatures. In fact, the only way I can think of improving them could be by BEJEWELING THEM…

… like what Claire Scully does under the moniker, The Quiet Revolution. Check out the rest of her portfolio as well. Neat.

Words to Work By

April 27

There’s a lot of mumbo-jumbo and word-jiggery in the design world. Lot’s of people use lots of big words to sound a bit like they might know what they’re on about. Then these words catch on a become the thing to say. Words like “juxtaposition”, which I try to get in every Design and Access Statement at least once or twice. Purely ironically of course. “Cross-Polination” is another good one.

These sorts of things are the subject of ad agency Publicis Mojo’s series of Words to Work By posters.

Should there be a poster along the lines of “I shall not display my posters by having someone dressed in black hold them over their head?”. This seems to have become industry standard now.

Publicis Mojo, and I nabbed it off of the Creative Review blog.

Dan Witz

April 27

I’m not a big fan of mosh pits. I don’t have the latent aggression to stand my ground, nor the energy to jump around so much. I’m British, far too polite to be pushing people about. Besides, I don’t think they’ll have a mosh pit at The Michael Jackson gig.

What I do like is these images of mosh pits by the man Dan Witz.

Christopher Walken

March 19

For quite a long time I’ve been quietly suggesting that Christopher Walken might be my favourite person going. I think this is because he surprises me. It’s not like he jumps out in front of me from bushes wearing Halloween masks when I’m on my way home. Not that kind of surprise. More this kind of surprise. It just seems like he has a great deal more personality than most celebrities.

Anyways, since seeing his Twitter, I’ve been hoping it’s really him. If it’s not actually him, and its an elaborate hoax, then it’s still verging on genius. I have not understood twitter at all, until I starting reading these (I do an amazing impression of Christopher Walken by the way).

Relleno De Mono

March 10

Lately, quite a lot of the things I see on the internet that make me think “That’s a bit bloody good, wish I’d done that!” seem to be from one of the South American countries. Largely (but by no means exclusively) from Chile and Argentina. Two countries I really enjoyed when I was there. Latest on the list is this monster-lovin’ artist, Relleno De Mono out of Chile. Miss Stride and I have been knocking email back and forth for the large part of the day going “I like this one the best” and “Check this one out”. Great collages with drawings coupled with vintage photos.

I can’t remember where I done saw this. Some blog, somewhere.

Carl Kleiner

March 10

These are bloody lovely photos by Mr. Carl Kleiner for FC United, which is some kinda crazy collaboration between him and Mr. Fredrick Evensen. Great stuff, it’s well worth your while checking out some of the other work on all three of the aforementioned interweb sites. I’m with the subdued colours. And the cloud. It all works very nicely together.

Oh yeah. and I like the models outfit. It’s all going on there. The whole lot.

At-At Boombox

February 25

Following on from my recent spat of “I don’t really love Star Wars, but this is pretty cool” posts (which can be seen here and here), here be another one (I’ll try and make it my last, but as long as people keep designing stuff like this, I’m going to keep blogging about it). It’s a flipping well cool At-At Boombox. I’d love one, especially if it were radio controlled. For some reason it makes me think it should be in a Beck video possibly.

I can’t really tell you a great deal about it. A short bit of research didn’t yield much info. Something to do with these guys.

Neo Gramophone

February 20

This beautiful bit of folded high quality materials is the new design by Lars Amhoff, out of Kinkyform, called the Neo Gramophone.

It’s an update of the traditional gramophone shape, that uses modern technology to yield a top-notch sound quality via itunes streaming or music loaded onto it via bluetooth. The base holds all the info and a nice sub and the trumpet, growing out of the base, is a speaker. Kinkyform are currently looking for investors to push this idea forward and to develop it in such away that quality can be maintained whilst keeping it in a non-luxury price range. Huzzah!

I’d buy one.

Dieter Rams at the V&A

February 20

This may be a bit short notice (or geographically inconvenient) for some of you, but it’s worth posting anyway.

Dieter Rams is doing a talk this evening at the V&A in London. He’ll be discussing his design ethos and the future of design. Its bound to be fascinating. Along with the Eames’, Rams is probably my favourite designer ever. His work for Braun was consistently amazing. Brilliant man.
