Brooklyn Superhero Supply Store

February 18

I don’t know what I prefer. The idea. The fact someone carried out. Or the design of the packaging.

Brooklyn went and got itself a Superhero Supply Store (372 Fifth), stocking such Superhero essentials as X-Ray vision in a bottle, 1 Gallon of Gravity, Oxygen Gum, Canned Chaos (my favourite) and the Antidote. Everything the budding superhero could ask for.

The whole thing is a front orchestrated by 826NYC, a non-profit organisation that exists to encourage high school kids to write creatively and to inspire teachers to encourage this further. That just makes it even more brilliant! There’s a secret door (of course) in the store that leads to an area filled up with kids reading, learning and doing all kinds of good what-not under the supervision of the 826NYC staff and tutors.

Mindblowing. I believe (I beleive…) Sam Potts Inc. is responsible for the design. If that’s true, bloody well done Sam Potts Inc.

  1. Very cool! And with writers like Dave Eggers and Sarah Vowell on their board of directors, the creativity shown here is not surprising.

Yep, there’s some great folk involved in the whole thing. All for a bloody good cause to.

Not to be a bastard or anything, but that place is oooooold. Like more than 5 years old.

Not a big deal for your post as you don’t present it as new, but places like Notcot shouldn’t link to this…

Studies show it takes an average of five years for stories of inventive New York based, Non-Profit organisations to filter across the Atlantic to seaside towns in England.

  3. Colin Says:

Indeed those studies are correct, however it then takes another 5 years for the yokels around here to install decent broadband to see such wonders.

Though don’t get me started on the time I tried to explain the idea of airplanes, i was nearly burnt at the stake.

Colin – Ah, the giant metal eagles of the sky. Scaring yokels since the Wright Brothers.

  4. Blake Says:

Truly inspiring. I’d have a field day in there.

    • theclickclickpress Says:

Blake – I’ll call a field day for all of us. On the bus at 9. Bring some lunch.

  5. Just for clarification, the Boston 826 in Roxbury is the latest installment of the project. I had the opportunity to work there this summer as an intern, in fact. Great experience. The Brooklyn store is really excellent as well though and they have some great designers working with them.
